The Government College for Women Thiruvananthapuram is a pioneering institution of higher education in south India. It is the sixth oldest college in Kerala and one of the oldest women’s colleges in the country. Started as the Sircar Girl’s School in 1864 by the royal family of Travancore , it was elevated to the status of a first grade college and was renamed H.H. The Maharaja’s College for Women in 1920.
The Government College for Women was established with a clear mission to provide women with a modern, liberal education and thus transform society and the nation. The college is still committed to the ideas of liberal education and recognizes the fact that times have changed that it must adapt and evolve to keep up with the rapidly changing world. So the College addresses the needs of the society through providing quality non-formal education also. In academic and co-curricular activities, the College has been a model institution. We have eighteen PG departments offering almost all arts and science masters degree courses. In 2012, we got two new courses, PG in Commerce and UG in Statistics. Apart from vibrant and meaningful classroom teaching, the College provides several support programmes all of which make the educational experience of our students rich and indelible. We have a Placement Cell, Career Guidance Cell etc to support the students to get jobs after completing their studies. The Grievance Redressal Cell always monitors the activities in the college and solves any problems immediately. As part of the semesterization of UG courses, the College constituted various clubs to promote the extracurricular activities of our students. Our students have always shown academic brilliance in university examinations and in 2012, we had 21 ranks in post graduate courses.
We are thankful to the government, and all sections of society for their valuable contribution to this institute.
We appreciate members of teaching and non-teaching staff for their supporting role and welcome all the students who have joined this seat of learning to shape their future. And a word to the parent: we would be delighted to be involved in the education of your child and to foster in her the values we cherish. Thank you for considering us as the college for your child.
